MARGIN CALL
2011        [ Drama, Suspense, Intrigue ]        Rated  R
As you will see, this movie is meant for big boys & girls... and it's one hell of a well done movie!
Realistically depicts the urgency and impact inside a prominent Wall Street investment bank (that heavily uses its
own capital to underwrite financial debt securities they in turn sell in bulk to large institutional-type clients) on the very day the commercial Mortgage-Backed Securities market collapsed, which in real life prompted the beginning
of the 2008 global financial crisis, the 2008 U.S. stock market crash, and the corresponding U.S. real estate downturn.

ADVENTURELAND
2009        [ Romance, Comedy, Drama, Sexuality, Music ]        Rated  R
Go back to 1987 with Kristen Stewart, Jesse Eisenberg and Ryan Reynolds.  Has all the right eye-catching components and intimate relationship entanglements, to make this (mainly college-aged) story really grow on you.
A story driven by humor, sexual attraction and new love, set within some harsh realities that life typically brings...
and it all gets very complicated after they kiss???  Take note of all the songs/music that add that something special.
Matt Bush,  Martin Starr,  Margarita Levieva,  Bill Hader,  Kristen Wiig,  Wendie Malick,  Jack Gilpin,  Michael Zegen.

FREEWAY
1996        [ Comedy, Drama, Crime, Suspense, Violence, Sexuality ]        Rated  R
An oddly dark, twisted comedy that slowly heats up in-between punches to your
comfort level by way of
a violent & shocking narrative.
Clever, awkward, disturbing- and once you "get it", outrageous and funny!
Its surprising cast of huge names (much younger then) may eventually push this film into high notoriety,
similar to the popularity TRUE ROMANCE (1993) has gained.  Oliver Stone, Executive Producer.
Reese Witherspoon,  Kiefer Sutherland,  Brooke Shields,  Brittany Murphy,  Dan Hedaya,  Wolfgang Bodison,
Bokeem Woodbine,  Amanda Plummer,  Alanna Ubach,  Conchata Ferrell,  Annette Helde,  Susan Barnes,

CHILD 44
2015        [ Drama, Military, Crime, Suspense, Intrigue, Violence, Love Story ]        Rated  R
So much great acting and drama in an amazing film of exceptional quality.  Ultimately, a story of love.
Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace are, as usual, intensely powerful together.  NOTE: requires 100% of your attention
as there are 3 major themes in this movie: the main backdrop of the story (the Stalin era of the Soviet Union);
the love story of the 2 main characters (under deadly pressure from the Stalin regime); and the series of murders.
With these 3 intense themes intertwined throughout, many viewers can be overloaded and unable to appreciate
how wonderful this movie truly is... possibly the reason why it never became well known, despite the superb cast.
Gary Oldman,  Fares Fares,  Joel Kinnaman,  Paddy Considine,  Jason Clarke,  Vincent Cassel.
Director:  Daniel Espinosa.

DETOUR
1945        [ Film Noir, Suspense, Drama, Crime, Romance ]        Black & White
One of the prime early examples of classic 1940s and 1950s American "film noir."
A celebrated Hollywood "B-movie" that perfectly captures its story with a style and mood that claws at you.
The visual presentation (way too dark and gritty even for its time & genre) works well to create the film's unique
texture.  Don't like the slow, confusing beginning?  ... just wait until the young woman hitchhiker trades places
with the dead man in the ditch!  One year after the film-noir movie that jump-started it all: DOUBLE INDEMNITY (1944).
Tom Neal,  Ann Savage,  Claudia Drake,  Edmund MacDonald,  Pat Gleason.
Director:  Edgar G. Ulmer.

IN A LONELY PLACE
1950        [ Drama, Romance, Crime, Mystery, Suspense, Film Noir ]        Black & White
Humphrey Bogart plays one of his most real, and dark, characters- suspected of murder at worst, while sporting Bogart's signature, on-camera personality at best.  A substantial script anchors a "complete" film.
Opposite Bogart is the forever tantalizing Gloria Grahame, a 1953 "Best Actress in a Supporting Role" Oscar winner.
Frank Lovejoy,  Carl Benton Reid,  Martha Stewart,  Art Smith,  Jeff Donnell,  Robert Warwick,  Morris Ankrum,
William Ching,  Steven Geray,  Hadda Brooks.
Director:  Nicholas Ray.

AMERICAN WARFIGHTER
2018        [ Action, Mystery, Drama, Military, Love Story, Family, Violence ]        No Rating Found
An unlikely masterpiece: a micro-budget "indie" film that's all about its big message of Heroism and Sacrifice.
NOT for shallow, unfocused, impatient moviegoers who can only see the movie's budget limitations on screen.

Don't miss how the "nightmares" conclude.  This filmmaker will NOT let you escape these hero-soldiers' deaths.
First feature film directed by Jerry G. Angelo, who also stars as the active-duty U.S. Navy SEAL suffering from PTSD.
Ryan Baumann top-bills in her feature film debut as "Ryan", the mysterious blonde girl in the SEAL's "nightmares."

HIGH SOCIETY
1956        [ Comedy, Music, Romance, Love Story ]        No Rating Found
Such a fun movie: Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra & Louis Armstrong in a very, very stylish musical.
This is the color remake of the famous THE PHILADELPHIA STORY (1940, non-musical starring Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant & James Stewart).  Snappy clothes, upscale settings, intricate relationships, and integrated musical numbers come together in a sophisticated story that, although stylistically different from the original movie, still offers its own equally wonderful dramatic and comedic excellence.  Get in the mood by enjoying the long "OVERTURE" at the beginning.

MAI WEI    ( aka:  MY WAY )
2011        [ Drama, War, Military, Action, Violence ]        Korean & Japanese: English subtitles        Rated  R
A huge, credible, exhilarating "epic war drama" that rivals every other war film ever made.
Based on actual events in the life of a Korean marathon runner (and another Japanese marathon runner) from
about 1928 up to the 1948 Olympics, focusing on their wartime trials, battlefield fighting, and differing loyalties.
What makes this a special war film is the blending of its "visual credibility" with its unique "theatrical execution."

Elvis Presley's wonderfully fun and slightly sexier (but less mentioned) contribution to the

 A year after his popular
VIVA LAS VEGAS (1964, co-starring Ann-Margret), came this cute and "classic" beach movie with the equally
dynamic Shelley Fabares.  A nicely done movie which makes our list with its focused & consistent storyline;

its choice of songs & dancing (including a pair of fairly edgy, striptease routines); and its cast of familiar faces

DAYS OF HEAVEN  ... for the true film buff willing to be patient with this ultra-slow plot.
1978        [ Drama, Love Story, Romance, Intrigue, Suspense, Crime, Violence ]        Rated  PG
Richard Gere: the beginning of his unique screen charisma & stardom, but released after his big exposure
in LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR (1977) as "Tony."  The voice of the young narrator "Linda" is an experience
all its own within the film as she tells the story-- a window into a harsh life in the very early 1900s.  A movie
that's more about the feeling and experience garnered via this reflective story set during harvest-time in Texas.
The film basically took 2 years to make and is immensely noteworthy for the reasons why (if of any interest).
Brooke Adams,  Sam Shepard,  Linda Manz,  Robert J. Wilke,  Jackie Shultis,  Stuart Margolin,  Timothy Scott.
Won 1 Oscar (1979 Academy Awards) for:  Best Cinematography (Néstor Almendros).

IN A VALLEY OF VIOLENCE
2016        [ Western, Suspense, Violence, Romance, Drama, Comedy ]        Rated  R
Slow down and get in sync with this quirky story as it begins, and slowly continues to offer up its unique realism.
Ethan Hawke and John Travolta are the big names in this traditional style Western.  It plays like a creative blend
of a Clint Eastwood "spaghetti western" and a Quentin Tarantino treatment, with a "bad guy" version of Mayberry's Barney Fife, a good woman, and a good dog.  To really appreciate it, you need to enjoy riding this story in low gear.
Taissa Farmiga,  James Ransone,  Karen Gillan,  Toby Huss,  Tommy Nohilly,  Larry Fessenden,  Burn Gorman,
Jumpy (as the dog "Abbie").

The breakout movie (& first feature film) of a very young Natalie Portman-- and she stars in it.

story; it's not.  A film from France.
